What
happens at the Consultation?
Your
medical history is reviewed to establish the cause and effects of the problem
You
have a thorough physical examination.
A
diagnosis and plan of treatment are made and discussed with you.
You
are treated to relieve pain and regain normal movement.
You
may be given techniques to manage your problem at home and enhance treatment
effects.
If
Physiotherapy is not the best option for you we will refer you for alternative
assessment and treatment.
What sort
of treatment will I receive?
Physiotherapists
have a wide range of treatment techniques at their disposal. The choice
of treatment depends on what is causing the problem and the severity of
the pain. Treatments may include-
Mobilisation
of joints, stretching and massage of muscles, acupuncture or dry needling,
electrotherapy, postural correction, strengthening and co-ordination exercises
and advice on comfortable resting positions.
How many
treatments will be required?
Every
person and problem is different so there are no set expectations. We will
be able to give you the predicted length of treatment once we have finished
the assessment and seen how the body responds to treatment.
How
do I stop the problem from returning?
Once
the cause of the problem has been identified we can work out ways to prevent
recurrence. It may require correction of faulty movement or posture.
What
is Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy?
Musculoskeletal
or Manipulative physiotherapists have completed an extra year’s training
to specialise in the assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions.
The high level of knowledge, skill and clinical expertise is maintained
through a compulsory professional development program.
Manipulation
is only used if it is the best treatment for that problem and accepted
by the patient.
